Meloni makes a surprise visit to Trump's residence

The American president-elect, Donald Trump, with the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni

The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has made an unofficial and unexpected visit to the residence of the US President-elect, Donald Trump in Florida, her office confirmed on Sunday.

In several photos released by the prime minister's office, Meloni and Trump are seen taking pictures at the entrance to the residence, and later chatting.

Her office did not give more details about the visit.

Photos of the two conservative leaders close to each other have been published on the front pages of all Italian newspapers.

Meloni is one of a number of world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who have visited Trump ahead of his inauguration at the White House on January 20.

Meloni realized this year just before the American president, Joe Biden, started a four-day visit to Rome.

In the photos published by Meloni's office, she was also seen in a meeting with Florida Senator Marco Rubio, nominated by Trump for US Secretary of State./REL
