Syria's Finance Minister, Mohammed Abazeed, said on Sunday that the interim government will raise salaries by 400 percent in the public sector next month, after completing reshuffles across ministries aimed at increasing efficiency and accountability.

This increase, believed to cost $127 million, will be financed from existing state resources, as well as a combination of regional aid, new investments, and efforts to regain access to Syrian assets frozen overseas.

"This is the first step towards emergency solutions in the current economic reality in our country", said Abazeed, for the Reuters news agency.

He said that this month's salaries will be released next week.

Syria's interim government, led by de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, was created after the brutal decades-long regime of Bashar al-Assad was toppled.

The Assad regime has been toppled by the Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, after nearly 14 years of civil war, which has killed over 500,000 people and displaced millions more.

HTS is a terrorist organization declared by the United States and the European Union.
