Seoul: Pyongyang's missile test appears to have failed

The launch of a ballistic missile into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula appears to have failed, South Korea's military said Wednesday. The missile appears to have originated from Pyongyang, South Korea's chief of staff said. Japan announced that a ballistic missile, believed to be from North Korea, appears to have fallen into the sea.

Earlier in the week, North Korea criticized the deployment of a US aircraft carrier to join joint exercises with South Korea and Japan and warned of an "insurmountable new demonstration of deterrence".

The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt arrived in the South Korean port city of Busan on Saturday to take part in joint military exercises later this month with the host nation and Japan, navy officials said.

The missile launch comes a day after marking the 74th anniversary of the start of the Korean War.

North Korea's state media, KCNA, said on Wednesday that a mass rally was held in Pyongyang to commemorate the anniversary, calling it a day of "battle against US imperialism", while naming the United States as the main enemy.

Recently, North Korea has launched hundreds of balloons filled with debris towards South Korea. A large Pyongyang military team built new fortifications near the heavily fortified border with South Korea, Seoul announced./ VOA
