The Senate passes a law to avert a strike by railroad workers

The Senate took swift action to avert a strike by railroad workers that the Biden administration and business leaders say would severely damage the economy.

The Senate passed a law Thursday that made legally enforceable a deal between railroad companies and union leaders in September. This agreement was rejected by some of the 12 unions involved, creating the possibility of a strike. The law was approved by the Senate with 80 votes in favor and 15 against. The Senate vote came a day after the House of Representatives approved the September deal.

Railroad companies and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce oppose changing the contract agreement that was reached in September largely based on the recommendations of a board appointed by Mr. Biden.

Biden on Monday praised the proposed contract, which includes a 24% pay increase over five years and five annual payments of $1,000, and had asked Congress to put the deal into effect without any modifications.

The tentative agreement does not provide for short-term sick leave, as the unions asked for 15 days and the railway companies offered one day./VOA
