The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, Gabriel Escobar, has stated that the biggest problem in the region is corruption.

During the interview in Washington, according to Escobar, nationalism and ethnic rivalry is only a mask for corruption.

The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State emphasizes that only external actions are not enough to hold corrupt actors accountable.

"Corruption is the biggest problem for the region. Nationalism and ethnic rivalry is really just a mask for this (corruption). It is very clear that all the most nationalist parties in the region are also the most corrupt. The leaders must take action, they must remove these people from positions of responsibility, they must remove these people from the party lists, and this applies to all countries in the region," he said, adding that the rest long-term is "to put pressure on the leaders (of the countries) to make the reforms of the rule of law that are required to join the European Union", said Escobar./ CNA.al
