The European Union can no longer afford its countries to have a veto when deciding on the European Union's foreign and security policy if it wants to have a leading role in global politics, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.

In an article published by the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper on Sunday, Mr Scholz says Moscow's war in Ukraine makes unity in Europe ever more urgent and increases pressure to end "selfish blockades" of European decisions by individual states member.

"E thënë thjesht, ne nuk mund të përballojmë më të kemi veto kombëtare, si për shembull në politikën e jashtme, nëse duam që të vazhdojë të na dëgjohet zëri në një botë fuqish të mëdha konkurruese," shtoi ai.

Zoti Scholz është përballur me kritika nga Kievi dhe aleatët e tjerë perëndimorë se Gjermania nuk ka marrë një pozicion udhëheqës për krizën në Ukrainë, një akuzë që kancelari gjerman e ka mohuar.

Agresioni rus, solli një ndryshim të madh në politikën e mbrojtjes së Gjermanisë pas dekadash me një rol të kufizuar ushtarak.

Konflikti e ka nxitur gjithashtu Berlinin drejt një roli më aktiv në politikën e jashtme në arenën globale, falë edhe presidencës së radhës në Grupin e Shtatë vendeve më të industrializuara këtë vit.

Mr Scholz said the G7 and other countries can work together to find solutions to the world food crisis, climate change and the pandemic if Germany takes a leading role for Europe and the world.

He said that Germany will make proposals for the common European migration policy, the consolidation of European defense, technological sovereignty and democratic stability in the coming months./ VOA
