Russia bombs a Ukrainian hospital, kills at least 9 people

Russia carried out two attacks on Saturday against a hospital in Ukraine's border region of Sumy, killing at least nine people and wounding 12 others.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, saying Russia was "waging war against hospitals".

He wrote in X that Ukrainian rescue teams "are doing everything to provide the necessary assistance to our citizens."

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko initially said six people were killed, including a police officer.

"As a result of the first attack, one person was killed and several floors of the hospital were destroyed," Klymenko said on Telegram, adding that as rescue teams were evacuating patients from the hospital, Russia launched another attack.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force said its air defenses shot down 69 of 73 drones launched by Russia in Ukrainian regions on the morning of September 28.

Russia also fired two ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles at Ukraine, the Air Force said, adding that the two cruise missiles were shot down.

Kiev's military administration said 15 Russian drones were downed on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital.

The new wave of Russian attacks came a day after President Zelensky met with Republican presidential candidate and former US president Donald Trump amid tensions over what critics say is the former president's pro-Russian stance.

"A very significant meeting with Donald Trump," Zelensky wrote on Telegram after talks on September 27 at Trump Tower in New York.

"I presented him with the Victory Plan. It explains in detail the situation in Ukraine and the consequences of the war for our people. We discussed many details," he added.

Standing next to Zelensky before the talks, Trump said if elected in November "we will work with both sides" to end the war in Ukraine.
