Former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba is expected to become Japan's new prime minister on Friday after winning a close race to lead the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Ishiba, 67, defeated nationalist candidate Sanae Takaichi in a runoff in what was one of the most unpredictable races for the party leader in decades. A total of nine candidates competed for this post.

The leader of the LDP, the party that has led Japan for almost the entire post-war era, is virtually certain to be appointed as the country's prime minister because the party has a majority in Parliament.

The outgoing prime minister, Fumio Kishida, announced in August that he would resign due to a series of scandals that have dented the party's popularity.

"We must trust the people, we must speak the truth with courage and sincerity, and work together to make Japan a safe place where everyone can live with a smile again," Ishiba said during a short speech. before the legislators after the vote.

His approach to diplomacy with Japan's biggest ally, the US, will be in the spotlight, as he has repeatedly called for more balanced relations between them.

During his campaign, he also called for the creation of an Asian NATO, an idea that has angered China and has been rejected by a senior US official.

US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel congratulated Ishiba on the post and said he looks forward to working with him to strengthen the US-Japan alliance.

Ishiba entered Parliament in 1986 after a brief career in banking, but his stances have earned him enemies within the LDP.

He was sidelined by outgoing Prime Minister Kishida, and became a dissenting voice in the party, enjoying strong support from the public and party members.

He has opposed the increased use of nuclear power and criticized his own party for not allowing married couples to use separate surnames./ CNA
