Corruption remains a major problem in Albania. This is the conclusion reached by the rapporteurs at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Joseph O'Reilly and Asim Mollazada, after the 3-day visit to our country.

In their report, the progress in the justice reform is welcomed, but results are required to be tangible for the citizens.

The two co-drafters of the report appreciate the extension of the mandate of the vetting bodies and the fact that the main institutions of the justice system are already functional, but state that this should be followed by visible achievements, mainly in terms of indictments and punishments for high-level officials involved in corruption.

The media environment also remains a concern. Appreciating the fact that the government abandoned the controversial anti-defamation package, they demand that these amendments to the media law be formally removed from the parliamentary procedure.

While the media are required to create appropriate self-regulatory mechanisms.

The rapporteurs of the Council of Europe require the opposition to function and overcome internal problems to play its role./euronews
