Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has reacted to Britain's recognition of the Palestinian state, describing it as a necessary step towards lasting peace in the region.
"His Excellency praised the recognition of the Independent State of Palestine by the United Kingdom, affirming that this constitutes an important and necessary step towards achieving a just and lasting peace in accordance with international legitimacy," a statement from Abbas's office said.
Palestine was formally recognized as a state this Saturday by three G-7 countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
