Flooding in northeastern Spain/ Search begins for 2 missing people

Two people are reported missing in Catalonia after torrential rains caused widespread flooding in the northeastern region of Spain this weekend. The torrential rains also disrupted rail services for several hours.

Two eyewitnesses told local authorities they saw the two walking over a bridge and falling into the Foix River in Cubelles, approximately 50 kilometers from Barcelona. The fire brigade believes they were swept away by the river and are searching for them near the banks and estuary of the river.

The ongoing search is being carried out by drone teams, helicopters and underwater units. The Catalan regional police and Maritime Rescue teams have also joined the search efforts.

Torrential rainfall mainly affected the southern part of the Barcelona metropolitan area and flash flooding resulted in rivers overflowing in numerous areas.

Meanwhile, in Vilafranca del Penedes, one of the most affected areas, torrential rains caused the complete flooding of the ground floor of the regional hospital, affecting the hospital's electricity supply and resulting in the closure of the emergency department./CNA
