Bus catches fire in India, 20 dead

At least 20 people have died when a bus carrying more than 50 passengers caught fire in the western Indian state of Rajasthan. The bus was travelling between the cities of Jaisalmer and Jodhpur when the tragic incident occurred.

"Nineteen passengers died inside the bus and another succumbed to his burns on a road in Jodhpur," Rajesh Meena, a police officer, told AFP.

According to local media, the bus stopped on the side of the road because smoke was coming out of the back, before being engulfed in flames within a very short time.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter that he was shocked by the loss of human lives and promised compensation of up to 200,000 rupees (about 1,940 euros) to the families of the deceased. In India, the most populous country on the planet, the road safety situation is described as catastrophic. /CNA
