After Easter greetings, Pope Francis meets with the US vice president

Pope Francis held a private meeting Sunday morning at the Vatican with US Vice President JD Vance, the Holy See announced.

Vance, a devout Catholic who had clashed with the Pope over the immigration policies of President Donald Trump's administration, met with Francis at his Vatican residence and congratulated each other on the feast of Easter, the Vatican said in a statement.

"Pope Francis held a brief private meeting, lasting a few minutes, and the two exchanged greetings for Easter," the statement said.

Vance, who is visiting Italy with his family this weekend, met with senior Vatican officials on Saturday for formal meetings. The Pope, who is recovering from pneumonia, did not attend the meetings.

The Pope and Vatican officials have criticized some of the Trump administration's policies, including plans to deport millions of immigrants from the United States and major cuts to foreign aid and domestic social programs.

Francis has called the crackdown on immigration "shameful." Vance, who became a Catholic in 2019, cited the teachings of the Catholic Church, dating back to the medieval era, to justify the policy.

The Pope responded to the theological concept Vance used to defend this approach in an open letter to American Catholic bishops in February, calling Trump's plan a "major crisis" for the United States./ CNA
