US Secretary Rubio visits France/ Discussions with French counterpart Barrot expected

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Paris for high-level meetings to end the war in Ukraine, the US State Department confirmed.

Rubio will be in the French capital from April 16 to 18 for talks with European counterparts to advance President Trump's goal of ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with his French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot on Thursday during his visit to Paris and they will discuss the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and the Iran nuclear talks, a French diplomatic source said on Wednesday.

The administration of US President Donald Trump resumed negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program this month with talks in Oman last weekend and a second round expected in Rome this weekend. It has also launched talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

The State Department said Rubio was traveling with US envoy Steve Witkoff to meet European officials with the goal of stopping the war sparked by Russia's invasion in 2022. /CNA
