The Parliament of the European Union has adopted a new resolution asking the Council of the EU to accept Schengen for Bulgaria and Romania and allow both countries to join the borderless area before the end of the year.
Through a statement to the media, the parliament revealed that the new resolution states that both countries have met all the necessary criteria to join Schengen and were supported by 526 MEPs, while only 57 were against.
According to the same, keeping Bulgaria and Romania out of the Schengen area socially and economically harms the population and businesses in these two countries, reports "SchengenVisaInfo.com".
The resolution concludes that keeping Bulgaria and Romania out of Schengen not only harms the EU's common market by hindering the free movement of goods between member states, but also affects the environment.
"The health of drivers, customs agents and people living near border points is at risk from increased pollution from the thousands of vehicles waiting to cross the border every day as around 46,000 tonnes of CO2 are emitted each year," say MEPs.
Romania and Bulgaria, along with Ireland and Cyprus, are the last EU member states outside the Schengen area.
While Ireland had refused to join in 1985, Cyprus cannot yet join due to its problems with Northern Cyprus.
