Venezuelan oil/Trump: Cuba should reach an agreement before it's too late

US President Donald Trump called on Cuba "to make a deal" or face consequences - which he did not specify - warning that shipments of Venezuelan oil and money to Havana would be stopped.

“THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA – ZERO,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I suggest you make a deal BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.”

This statement comes a week after US forces captured ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in an operation carried out in Caracas that left dozens of Venezuelan and Cuban security personnel dead.

Earlier on January 11, Trump shared a message suggesting that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio could become president of Cuba, which is currently under communist rule.

Trump shared this post with the caption: "Sounds good to me."

Meanwhile, in a later tweet, Trump said that "Cuba has lived for many years off large amounts of OIL and MONEY from Venezuela. In return, Cuba has provided security services to the last two dictators of Venezuela, BUT NO MORE!"

"Most of those Cubans are DEAD from last week's US attack and Venezuela no longer needs protection from the bandits and extortionists who have held them hostage for so many years."

Under a US trade embargo, Havana has since 2000 increasingly relied on Venezuelan oil, secured under an agreement reached with Maduro's predecessor, Hugo Chavez.

Days ago, Trump announced that Venezuela would export up to $2 billion worth of crude oil to the US, after Caracas and Washington reached an agreement to this effect.

This agreement is a strong sign that the Venezuelan government is responding to Trump's request to open its doors to American oil companies if it does not want to face the risk of further military intervention.

Trump has said he wants Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, to give the US and private companies "full access" to Venezuela's oil industry. /REL
