Mitsotakis: Greece has faced the worst weather conditions in 40 years

Fire-ravaged Greece has faced its worst weather conditions in four decades this year, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told parliament on Wednesday.

According to United Nations reports, the Mediterranean region has been designated by scientists as a "hot spot" of climate change, with warming higher than the global average.

Greece is repeatedly hit by scorching heat waves and devastating fires every summer.

"We expected a very difficult year in terms of climate, it was the most difficult in the last 40 years according to data from all scientists, including those from the national climate monitor ," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in parliament.

He noted "persistently higher than average temperatures", "drought", "strong winds", adding that Greece must face the consequences of climate change.

So far, the number of fires has reached 9,101, up from 7,163 last year, 44,000 hectares of land have been burned, the prime minister said during a parliamentary debate on the issue.

Forest fires started earlier than normal this year. Massive fires have been recorded since March in the north of the country.

Greece experienced its hottest summer yet, authorities announced in September, with heatwaves in June and record summer temperatures.

June and July were the warmest months since records began in 1960.

More than 20 people died from forest fires in Greece last year./ VOA
