Nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned Hungarians on Wednesday that they must "stand up" to the European Union, saying Brussels is trying to topple his government.
Speaking at an event marking the 1956 uprising against Soviet repression, which was brutally suppressed by the Red Army, Orban said the EU wants to install a "puppet government" because "Hungarian independent policies are unacceptable to Brussels".
Orban is seen as Moscow's closest ally in the EU.
He also said that "Slavic soldiers from the east" could be stationed in Hungary again, referring to Ukraine.
He provided no evidence to back up his claims during his speech at the event to thousands of supporters. Orbán has used the event in the past to compare the EU to the Soviet Union.
The EU has suspended billions of euros worth of financial support to Hungary, amid disagreements over Orbán's policies, which have been widely criticized as undermining the rule of law in the central European country.
Hungary and the EU have been talking for months about aid to Ukraine, immigration, suspicions about the misuse of bloc funds and the violation of its laws./ REL
