With a majority of votes/ China elects Xi Jinping's ally as prime minister

The man named as China's next prime minister by President Xi Jinping has been officially elected by parliament. Li Qiang is the former leader of the Communist Party of China's largest city, Shanghai.

The 63-year-old received almost every vote from more than 2,900 delegates to the National People's Congress.

A close ally of President Xi, he is considered a pragmatist and will be tasked with reviving the country's struggling economy.

No reporters were allowed in the room as votes were cast during a rubber-stamp meeting of China's parliament. There was applause as Xi cast his vote. L
