Over 100 fires reported in Kosovo in the last few hours, one firefighter injured

The Emergency Management Agency has announced that due to high temperatures and strong winds, fires have spread in several areas of Kosovo.

The agency announced that a firefighter was injured in Ferizaj during a firefighting intervention.

"The Agency's Operational Center report shows an increase in the number of fire outbreaks, with a total of 101 cases reported in the last six hours alone. Of these, 48 are still active, while 53 have been localized," the Agency's announcement states.

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, said that the situation is difficult and requires rapid and coordinated action from all institutions.

"The institutions of the Republic of Kosovo are mobilized to provide the necessary assistance. The KSF is in a state of full readiness and ready to provide immediate support if requested by municipal or central authorities for civil emergencies," said Osmani.

In the village of Zasella in the Municipality of Mitrovica, there was also a helicopter intervention by KFOR.

The agency called on citizens not to light fires outdoors and to report arson to the emergency numbers 112, 193 and 192.

Previously, this agency had said that most of the massive fires in Kosovo are caused by humans.

Although the Emergency Management Agency has not indicated which areas the fires have spread to, the mayor of Suhareka, Bali Muharremaj, has announced fires in several villages in this municipality.

"Anyone who has the opportunity and has firefighting equipment, please help in the Dubravë - Sallagrazhdë - Mushtisht area," he wrote on Facebook, where he published a video.

The Emergency Management Agency reported yesterday a total of 23 fires, of which seven were active as of 3:00 p.m.

It is not yet known how much damage has been caused, but earlier this month many videos were published on social media showing how fields planted with cereals such as wheat were being engulfed by fires.

According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), during 2024, 94 fires were recorded in Kosovo, which burned a total of 12,079 hectares of forests and shrubs. / Rel
