EU airports to lift 100ml liquid limit for hand luggage

Airport security screening equipment capable of scanning the contents of large containers of liquids could soon be deployed across the EU, meaning passengers will no longer need to ensure they do not have bottles containing more than 100ml when travelling.

The European Commission confirmed that the change, first reported by the Italian newspaper 'Il Corriere della Sera', is in progress.

Under current EU rules, liquids, aerosols and gels carried in hand luggage must generally be packed in containers holding no more than 100 ml, although exceptions are made for special diets, baby products and medicines, because traditional security equipment, such as X-ray machines, cannot effectively detect liquid explosives.

But new explosives detection systems are now available for cabin baggage, and these have now been installed at several EU airports, such as Rome and Milan, which would allow passengers to carry larger containers of liquids on board./CNA
