WAR IN UKRAINE / European Commission proposes 19th set of sanctions against Russia

The European Commission said on Friday that it has submitted a package of additional sanctions against Russia for approval by member states.

The 27-member bloc is seeking to increase pressure on Russia to end its war in Ukraine.

"We can confirm that the Commission has adopted a new package of sanctions against Russia, the 19th package," Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho told reporters in Brussels.

Leaders of EU member states will also have to agree on the proposed sanctions package before it can enter into force.

In the past, Russia has said that European sanctions will not affect its decision-making on the war in Ukraine, which Moscow began with a full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022./ CNA
