North Korea Prepares/Shows Opponents First Tactical Submarine With Nuclear

North Korea has launched its "first operational nuclear attack submarine" and assigned it to the fleet that patrols the waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan, state media said on Friday.

Submarine No. 841 - named "Hero Kim Kun Ok", named after a North Korean historical figure, will be one of North Korea's "main underwater attack vehicles of the naval force", leader Kim Jong Un said at the ceremony of departure on Wednesday.

At the launch ceremony, Kim stressed that arming the navy with nuclear weapons was an urgent task and promised more submarines and surface ships equipped with tactical nuclear weapons for the navy, KCNA news agency reported.

"North Korea plans to convert other existing submarines into nuclear-armed vessels and accelerate its push to eventually build nuclear-powered submarines," Kim added.

Analysts said the vessel appears to be a modified Soviet-era Romeo-class submarine, which North Korea bought from China in the 1970s and began manufacturing domestically. Its design, with 10 launch tube clips, indicated it was most likely to carry ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, analysts said.

South Korea's military said in its response that the submarine did not appear ready for normal operations and that there were signs that North Korea was trying to exaggerate its capabilities.

North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs are banned by United Nations Security Council resolutions.
