The Democratic candidate in the race for president of the United States, Kamala Harris, has chosen the governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, as a candidate for vice president, a source close to the international media has said.

Walz, 60, an Army National Guard veteran and former teacher, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 from a Republican-leaning district and served for 12 years before won the position of governor of Minnesota in 2018.

As governor, Walz has pushed a progressive agenda that includes free school supplies, goals to fight climate change, tax cuts for the middle class and increased vacation days for Minnesota workers.

Walz has raised his voice to protect women's reproductive rights, but he has also shown his conservative side on occasion, defending agricultural interests and the right to guns.

Harris, the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, is adding to the presidential candidacy a politician who enjoys the support of Democrats at home, but also has a good image in Wisconsin and Michigan, two states leading to the victory of a candidate. Harris's campaign hopes that Walz's career, and his image on social networks, may get the attention of those who have not yet decided who to vote for.

Harris, 59, has revived the Democratic Party's hopes for a re-election victory since incumbent Joe Biden, 81, dropped out of the race.

Harris and Walz will face Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, also a military veteran, in the Nov. 5 election./REL
