Japan opposes South Korea's military exercises

Japan has protested to South Korea after the latter conducted military exercises on the disputed islands. Japan's foreign ministry said it was "extremely regrettable" that Seoul conducted the drills.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry has summoned a senior diplomat from the South Korean Embassy in Tokyo, and the Japanese Embassy in Seoul has also summoned a senior South Korean official to formally protest the drills.

"Takeshima is unquestionably Japan's undivided territory, according to historical facts and based on international law," the Japanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement released Friday.

"South Korea's military exercises are unacceptable and extremely regrettable."

The two countries have bitter disputes over the sovereignty of a group of islands called Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea. These islands are located between the two countries in the Sea of ??Japan, also known as the East Sea.

"The territorial defense exercises in the East Sea were conducted in order to fulfill our mission to protect our territory, people and property," a South Korean military official said.
