French President Emmanuel Macron claims protesters are using Snapchat, TikTok and Telegram to film violent events and organize illegal rallies.

French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the possibility of banning access to some social media features at a meeting with local mayors in cities that have seen violent protests.

Macron told about 300 local leaders that "we need to reflect on the use of social media by younger people and on the bans we need to put in place," in a video seen by several French and international media outlets.

Government spokesman Olivier Véran has tried to reassure the public that it will only involve "functional suspensions".

Macron and others allege that protesters are using Snapchat, TikTok and Telegram — all social media platforms with limited content monitoring functionality — to film violent events and, officials say, to organize illegal rallies./ CNA
