US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has arrived in Beijing for a four-day visit aimed at improving relations between the United States and China, although expectations are not high from either side.

Yellen was met by an official from the Chinese Ministry of Finance and the US envoy to China.

Both countries acknowledge that national security concerns have overshadowed economic ties, and there are doubts that Yellen's visit will significantly ease tensions.

However, US officials emphasize the importance of dialogue, even when disagreements exist.

During her visit, Yellen plans to address what the US considers "unfair" practices by China, such as punitive actions against US companies and barriers to market access.

She is scheduled to meet with China's Premier Li Qiang and former economic official Liu He.

Reuters news agency quotes Chinese analysts as criticizing the US for its concerns over China's trade practices, stressing the need for a balanced approach.

Although no major breakthroughs are expected, U.S. officials say Yellen will try to open new lines of communication and coordination on economic issues and highlight the consequences of providing aid to Russia, something China has strongly opposed.

Yellen's long-awaited trip comes weeks after a visit by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who agreed with Chinese President Xi Jinping that mutual rivalry should not turn into conflict.

Both visits are seen as critical to improving communications after the US military shot down a Chinese balloon over the United States.

These meetings come ahead of a possible meeting between US President Joe Biden and Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting scheduled for November in San Francisco./ REL
