The attack on the Christmas market/ Pope's message to the German president: I am shocked

Pope Francis has sent a message of support to the German president for the terrible attack that took place last night at the Christmas market in Magdeburg, where five people were killed and around 200 were injured.

In the message released by the Vatican, the Pope says he is "shocked by the news of the attack".

He says that he " thanks all those who are working and supporting the affected people in this difficult time".

German officials confirmed earlier that a nine-year-old child was among the five people killed last night in the terror attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg.

The authorities announced that 200 people were injured in the attack, and that 41 of them are in serious condition.
