Germany calls on the EU for sanctions against Iran

Germany's Foreign Ministry called on the European Union to decide to ban entry into the bloc's countries, as well as freeze assets, to those responsible for the brutal suppression of anti-government protests in Iran.

The most sustained protests in years against Iran's theocracy have now entered their fourth week. They erupted on September 17, following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish girl, who died in custody. Mahsa Amini was arrested by the so-called morality police, under suspicion of having violated the strict Islamic dress codes for women and girls.

“Ne do të bëjmë të mundur që BE-ja t'u ndalojë hyrjen atyre që janë përgjegjës për këtë shtypje brutale e të ngrijë pronat e tyre në BE”, shtoi ajo. "U themi njerëzve në Iran: Ne qëndrojmë dhe mbetemi pranë jush".

But Ms. Baerbock did not name any specific individuals or organizations that Germany is seeking to punish through sanctions.

On Thursday, EU lawmakers approved a resolution calling for sanctions against those responsible for the death of Mahsa Amin and for the violent suppression of protests./ VOA
