Russia appoints commander-in-chief for war in Ukraine

The Russian Ministry of Defense has named General Sergei Surovikin as commander of Kremlin forces fighting in Ukraine.

This is the first official to be appointed as the commander of all Russian forces that are on Ukrainian territory, since February.

The announcement came hours after an explosion, and a large fire, suspended traffic and damaged a key bridge connecting Russia to the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in the early hours of October 8.

The origin of the explosion has not yet been identified.

The Crimean peninsula was annexed by Moscow in 2014.

“Me vendim të ministrit të Mbrojtjes, gjenerali i ushtrisë, Sergei Surovikin, është emëruar komandat i grupit të përbashkët të trupave në zonat e operacionit special ushtarak”, është thënë në deklaratë, duke u përdorur referenca e Kremlinit për luftën në Ukrainë.
