Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered measures to tighten security along a key bridge linking Russia to Crimea after a powerful explosion caused part of it to collapse. The 20-kilometer-long Kerch Bridge is an important supply artery for Russian troops fighting in Ukraine. It is seen by the Kremlin as a symbol of its asserted control over Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. So far no one has claimed responsibility for the blast that occurred early Saturday morning, but the damage to the bridge is being seen as a heavy blow for Russia and President Putin.

President Putin ordered the establishment of stronger security measures for the bridge, as well as for the infrastructure through which the Crimean Peninsula is supplied.

Ukraine did not directly claim responsibility for the attack. But during a speech, President Zelenskiy referred to the explosion, describing Crimea as "cloudy but warm". He added that Ukrainians are headed for a future "without occupiers", particularly in Crimea, and that the occupiers' best chance is to leave while they still have the chance.
