Russia has increased security after a large explosion on the Crimean bridge, where part of it was destroyed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the country's Federal Security Service (FSB) to monitor the link to the occupied peninsula.

The bridge is also a key symbol of Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. The explosion killed three people, according to Russian investigators.

Officials have informed that the work to repair the bridge has started immediately.

The Russian deputy prime minister ordered the destroyed parts of the bridge to be removed immediately and said divers would begin investigating the damage below the waterline on Sunday morning.

The bridge has been crucial for Russia to move military equipment, ammunition and troops into southern Ukraine.

But new satellite images released on Saturday showed smoke and fire near collapsed areas of the 19 km (12 mile) bridge, which opened with much fanfare four years after Moscow annexed Crimea.

Since it plays a strategic role in the war, Ukrainian authorities have said it is a legitimate target as they vow to retake the peninsula.

Ukrainian officials responded with covert approval of the explosion - but have not indicated that their forces were behind the attack./ CNA.al
