Germany calls its ambassador to Moscow for consultations

Germany summoned its envoy to Moscow for consultations after suspicions that Russian military spies hacked the emails of key members of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party, as well as other sensitive government and industrial targets.

A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said Monday that Alexander Graf Lambsdorff will return to Berlin for a week of consultations.

Lambsdorf will not be in Russia during the inauguration of President Vladimir Putin for a new term, which will take place on May 7, the spokesman said.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on May 3 that Russian military hackers were behind a months-long hacking operation.

Also last week, the German Interior Ministry said the hacking campaign began as far back as March 2022 - a month after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine - and that they managed to gain access to Social Democratic Party headquarters emails. since December last year.

According to the statement of this ministry, the hackers also targeted German companies, including those in the defense and aerospace sectors, as well as targets related to the war in Ukraine.
