US airstrikes in Syria kill 37 militants linked to extremist groups

The US military said on Sunday that 37 militants, linked to the Islamic State extremist group and the al-Qaeda group, had been killed in two airstrikes in Syria.

Two of those killed were senior militants, she said.

US Central Command said it carried out airstrikes in northwest Syria against a senior militant from the al-Qaeda-linked group Hurras al-Deen and eight others.

She says they were responsible for leading military operations.

The U.S. military also announced it carried out a September 16 strike on an Islamic State training camp in an undisclosed remote location in central Syria. In that attack, 28 militants were killed, including "at least four Syrian leaders".

"The air attack will make it impossible for the Islamic State to carry out operations against American interests, as well as against our allies and partners," the announcement states.

About 900 US troops are in Syria, along with an undisclosed number of contractors, in an effort to prevent the Islamic State extremist group from making a comeback.

The Islamic State wreaked havoc in Iraq and Syria in 2014, taking control of much of the territory.

American forces advise and assist their main allies in northeastern Syria, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, which are located not far from strategic areas where militant groups supported by Iran have a presence./ REL
