The British Transport Secretary resigns / Was convicted 10 years ago for fraud
British Transport Minister Louise Haigh

British Transport Minister Louise Haigh resigned on Friday over a 10-year-old conviction for fraud after she claimed her mobile phone had been stolen.

In a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ms Haigh said: "I remain fully committed to our political project but now believe it will be better served with my support from outside government."

"I appreciate that whatever the facts of the case, this case will inevitably be a distraction from doing the work of this government and the policies to which we are jointly committed," she wrote.

The resignation came hours after Sky News TV and London's The Times newspaper reported that Ms Haigh had been charged with fraud after she reported a work mobile phone stolen from her when it was robbed in 2013. She later said she had listed the phone incorrectly. among the stolen items.

After finding the phone and turning it back on, she was called in for questioning by the police. Ms Haigh pleaded guilty to fraud by misrepresentation and was granted bail.

In a statement before her resignation, Ms Haigh said that "on the advice of my solicitor I pleaded guilty - despite the fact that this was a genuine mistake from which I did not benefit. The judges accepted all these arguments and gave me the lowest sentence penalizing".

Ms Haigh, 37, has represented a constituency in Sheffield, northern England, in parliament since 2015 and was appointed to the key transport post after Prime Minister Starmer's centre-left Labor Party won the election in July.

Prime Minister Starmer appointed 49-year-old Heidi Alexander to replace Ms Haigh. Ms Alexander returned to parliament in July's general election, after a six-year absence, part of which she spent at London City Hall, in a prominent position as head of the capital's transport system./ VOA
