Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris will reopen after 5 years of restoration.

French President Emmanuel Macron has followed the inspections for the reconstruction work, in his last tour of the construction site.

A day after the April 2019 fire that destroyed the spire and roof, Macron vowed that "we will rebuild the cathedral to be even more beautiful and I want it to be finished within five years."

While the interior will be ready to welcome visitors and worshipers on December 8 for the first time since 2019, the scaffolding at the base of the newly restored spire will stand in 2025 and for another three years on the east side of monument, Philippe Jost (Filipe Xhost).

The fire and reconstruction turned the cathedral into a no-go area for the public and left a void in the heart of Paris for many locals.

About 140 million euros of unspent funds remain in the reconstruction budget, an indication of the extent of the work that remains to be completed. The scaffolding has not yet been removed and the area has not been cleared of concrete.

It took 5 years to rebuild Notre-Dame after the fire that destroyed it.

In fact, it had been a construction site for years even before the fire. Scaffolding was already in place in 2019 for a previous restoration effort that was not completed due to the April 15 fire./ CNA
