American federal authorities have arrested a man who threatened to kill the newly elected US president Donald Trump and his family.

Manuel Tamayo-Torres, an Arizona resident, was arrested in San Diego, California on Monday after posting a series of videos on Facebook, including one in which he was holding an AR-15 rifle.

In a video posted on Facebook on November 21, Tamayo-Torres reportedly said: "You will die. Your son will die. Your whole family will die. … I'm going to put a hole in your face.”

Investigators said in charging documents that the man had been posting "numerous" videos "almost daily" over several months.

Donald Trump narrowly avoided death at a rally in Pennsylvania in July when a bullet fired from about 150 meters away grazed his ear. The Secret Service killed the attacker, identified as 20-year-old American Thomas Crooks. Another would-be assassin, Ryan Routh, was arrested in September after he set up an ambush at a Florida golf course owned by Trump.
