President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he has engaged various government agencies to help residents of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, states that have been hit by Hurricane Idalia. Mr. Biden also said that he has not forgotten the victims of the fire in Hawaii.
Faced with successive waves of extreme weather, wildfires that burned a historic town on the island of Maui and Hurricane Idalia that caused major flooding, the Democratic president, who is running for a second term, sought to reassure affected residents that his administration it will help them.
President Biden said he had spoken with the governors of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, who were influenced by Idalia. He was briefed on the situation in those states by Deanne Criswell, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and directed her to meet Thursday with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to begin assessing hurricane damage and the needs of people there.

Ron DeSantis, a Republican presidential candidate, and Democratic President Joe Biden have clashed in recent months over the Florida governor's conservative social policies. But President Biden said there was no trace of politics in his conversations with the governor about the aftermath of the storm.
"I know this seems strange," Mr. Biden said, noting how partisan politics has become.
"I think he trusts my judgment and my desire to help, and I think he can suggest that this is not about politics," President Biden said. "It's about taking care of the people of his state."
Hurricane Idalia hit Keaton, Florida at 7:45 a.m. with sustained winds of up to 120 miles per hour. Idalia weakened to a tropical storm with winds of 113 km/h on Wednesday afternoon, also affecting the states of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.
Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell on Wednesday declined to blame climate change for the storm, but said her agency was seeing a sharp increase in the number of extreme weather events.
On Tuesday, she told reporters that extreme storms are part of a "new normal" Americans are facing, adding that environmentally friendly investments and other preventative measures are critical in preparing for future storms./VOA
