Americans, at the polls/ Facts about the US elections

Millions of Americans are voting this Tuesday to decide who will be the next president of the United States.

Polls have been open since 8 a.m. in 38 states and the District of Columbia.

Up to 150 million Americans can vote in this year's elections.

Voters will choose the candidate who wins the popular vote in each state to form the Electoral College. The majority of electoral votes of the Electoral College is 270.

To become president, a candidate needs at least 270 electoral college votes.

On December 17, members of the Electoral College will officially vote for president and vice president in each state's capital.

On January 6, 2025, those electoral votes will be counted in the House of Representatives.
