Brussels officials are seeking a 27.5 percent budget increase for European Council President Charles Michel to pay for his world travel as he tries to resolve the diplomatic fallout from the war in Ukraine.

The budget "destined for the function of the President of the European Council" will increase from 2 million euros to 2.5 million in 2024, according to the budget for Michel's office. 

"This increase is mainly due to "expensive travel costs due to intense international activity as a result of the war in Ukraine," the document says.

Rritja e buxhetit ka të ngjarë të zemërojë disa qeveri evropiane, të cilat tashmë mendojnë se Michel po shpenzon shumë kohë në diplomacinë e jashtme, në vend që të koordinojë kompromise brenda vendeve të BE-së.

Një buxhet më i madh do të rezultonte gjithashtu në një pagë më të lartë për shkak të inflacionit, siç është rasti në departamentet e tjera të Këshillit.

Në total, rritja e pagave të këshillit pritet të rritet me 6.1 për qind, sipas dokumentit. Zëdhënësi i Michel, Barend Leitz, theksoi se ai ishte i shqetësuar për "një dokument teknik mbi të cilin kabineti i Michel nuk u konsultua dhe as nuk ishte i përfshirë".

"Kabineti nuk ndërhyn në procedura të tilla. Ky është vetëm një vlerësim i kostove," tha Leits.
