EU calls for calm after clashes between Israelis and Palestinians

Josep Borrell, the European Union's foreign policy chief, has condemned the escalation of violence between Israel and the Palestinians.

On Saturday, the European Union's top official called on the parties to show restraint and promote calm during religious holidays.

"Israel has the right to defend itself. At the same time, any response must be proportionate. The EU calls for an immediate end to the violence. Everything must be done to prevent the conflict from spreading," said Borrell.

Israeli-Palestinian tensions have increased significantly in recent days.
