Moscow warned on Friday that it may no longer adhere to an agreement to transport grain to the Black Sea if conditions imposed by the Russian side are not met. The agreement was reached last June between the Kremlin, Kiev, Turkey and the United Nations, and its deadlines have been postponed several times.
The agreement enables Ukraine – one of the world's largest grain producers – to export through a secure corridor to the Black Sea.
Meanwhile, farmers in central Europe are complaining as an influx of cheap Ukrainian wheat imports, exempt from customs duties until June 2024, has hurt prices and sales for local producers.
Today, thousands of Romanian farmers protested, blocking traffic and border crossings with tractors and trucks. They requested the intervention of the European Commission.
There were also protests from farmers in Poland and Bulgaria. Polish Agriculture Minister Henryk Kowalczyk resigned this week.
The Deputy Minister, Robert Telus, said today that Poland will temporarily stop all imports of Ukrainian wheat, to mitigate the impact on the market, but added that transit will be allowed./ VOA
