The Israel-Iran conflict/ A timeline of how the attacks unfolded

Years of tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated into outright conflict, as the two arch-enemies exchange missile attacks on an unprecedented scale.

What is the history of the Israel-Iran conflict?

Israel and Iran have been engaged in a shadow war for decades, with a long history of clandestine attacks from land, sea, air and cyberspace, which Tehran has carried out through its various proxies and allies in the region.

The two nations had been allies before the Islamic Revolution in 1979, which installed a new theocratic regime, ideologically opposed to Israel's existence. Israel would also see Tehran's nuclear ambitions as an existential threat.

In a major escalation, Israel announced Friday morning that about 200 Israeli Air Force jets dropped 330 munitions on about 100 targets in total overnight, hitting six cities, including Tehran and Iran's nuclear facility at Natanz.

At least 20 senior commanders were killed, two regional sources told Reuters, including the chief of staff of Iran's armed forces and senior leaders in the Revolutionary Guards.

Mossad operatives stationed deep inside Iranian territory also carried out a series of covert sabotage missions targeting the country's air defense systems, which included building a drone base near Tehran, a security source told the Times of Israel.

The attacks continued on Saturday, with Israel warning that three people had died and more than 50 others had been injured in several cities.

By warning Israel's allies not to fire missiles on its behalf, Iran also suggested that the conflict would spread to US bases in the region.

The state-run Fars news agency said two shells had hit Tehran's Mehrabad airport. Israeli strikes were also reported in about 10 locations in East Azerbaijan province. Authorities would later report that 60 people had been killed when a 14-story apartment block collapsed in Tehran.

On Saturday night, Israel targeted Iran's defense ministry headquarters in Tehran, as footage showed a flame spreading to the Shahran oil depot.

About a million people were forced into air raid shelters as sirens sounded in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Nearly 200 were wounded and six were killed in an attack on an eight-story building in Bat Yam, a city south of Tel Aviv, officials said. Four civilians were also reported dead in the mainly Palestinian town of Tamra.

As the conflict entered its third day, explosions rocked Tel Aviv on Sunday afternoon, before a second wave of Iranian attacks hit the port city of Haifa, with the coastal city of Bat Yam also attacked.

The Houthis announced they had targeted the central Israeli city of Jaffa with ballistic missiles in the past 24 hours, marking the first time an ally of Iran had joined the fray, with Hezbollah indicating on Friday that it had no plans to attack Israel.

Meanwhile, Israel expanded its targets beyond military installations to also strike oil refineries and government buildings.

A round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US, scheduled for Sunday, was canceled after Tehran said it would not negotiate while under Israeli attack.

Iranian missiles struck Tel Aviv and the port city of Haifa shortly before dawn on Monday, killing at least eight people and wounding more than 100 others, while destroying homes and causing damage to the US Embassy.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed that the latest attack used a new method that caused Israel's multilayered defense systems to target each other and allowed Tehran to successfully strike multiple targets, without providing further details.

But Israel insisted that only seven of the fewer than 100 missiles launched by Iran overnight had fallen in Israel. The Israeli military also claimed to have achieved air superiority over Iran and to have destroyed more than a third of Iran's surface-to-surface missile launchers.

Iran also announced that dozens of suspected saboteurs and "spies" linked to Israel had been arrested since the start of the conflict.

With no sign of an end to the fighting, the risk of further escalation loomed over a meeting of G7 leaders in Canada. Sir Keir Starmer said the summit would offer allies an opportunity to argue for de-escalation in the "fast-moving" situation in the Middle East.

The Israeli military said Tuesday it killed Iran's wartime chief of staff, Ali Shadmani, just four days after he was appointed. The IDF carried out widespread strikes on Iranian military targets, including weapons storage sites and missile launchers.

Three people were killed and four injured in the central Iranian city of Kashan in an Israeli attack, Iranian news agency Nournews reported.

Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it had struck Israel's Directorate of Military Intelligence and the operations center of the Mossad spy agency. Israel did not comment on the attacks.

Israel said Iran had fired 30 missiles towards the country early Tuesday morning.

Tensions between the two countries also erupted into direct conflict last year, as Iran fired hundreds of missiles and drones in its first direct attack on Israel in April 2024, in retaliation for an attack on its embassy compound in Damascus that killed several senior Iranian military commanders./CNA
