A record 10 million people visited the country in 2023 — more than three times its entire population. Although Albania is eager to reap the economic benefits of tourism — evident in planned infrastructure projects that include roads, hotels and airports — the prevailing political atmosphere now leans toward changing the direction of its tourism. The new idea is to encourage travel that is not just about sun, sand and sea, but about immersing yourself in the country’s little-visited communities, protected nature and unique culture and heritage.
