After the rains in Divjaka-Karavasta/ Dalmatian pelican nests escape the flood

The Dalmatian pelican, also known as the Dalmatian pelican, is one of the rare bird species that grows and develops without migrating in the Karavasta Lagoon.

In recent years, it has been among the protected birds, as the imposition of a bird moratorium affected nesting in Divjakë-Karavasta, the only Dalmatian pelican nesting site in Albania.

An important detail about this special bird also comes from the Albanian Ornithological Society (AOS), which has a special focus on the protection of the Dalmatian pelican. Based on numerous field observations, since January 2026, continuous rains and extraordinary flows flooded the lagoon and a good part of Myzeqe.

In mid-February 2026, the natural islands of the Karavasta Lagoon disappeared under water. Although the landscape was transformed into an endless expanse of water, only the nesting beds, along with the nests of Dalmatian pelican eggs, remained unflooded on this surface, thus demonstrating their ability to withstand even the most extreme weather conditions.

Caring for the Dalmatian pelican nests in the Karavasta Lagoon area is not only related to rehabilitation, but also to a mission to protect the rare birds that breed in the country./CNA
