Global report: Childhood obesity expected to worsen by 2040

A new global report by the World Obesity Federation found that childhood obesity worldwide is increasing rapidly and unless urgent action is taken, an estimated 228 million children aged 5–19 will be obese by 2040, a higher number than ever before.

According to the report, in 2025, an estimated 177 million children and adolescents were obese globally.

By 2040, this figure is expected to increase to 228 million, representing an increase from 8.7% to 11.9% of the population of children aged 5-19.

For the first time in history, the number of obese children is expected to exceed the number of children suffering from malnutrition, this is expected to happen before 2027.

Obesity is no longer just a phenomenon of rich countries. Low- and middle-income countries, where most of the world's children live, are seeing rapid increases in obesity cases. The Americas, Middle East and Western Pacific region has the highest obesity rates.
