EU agency raises alarm: Environmental pollution is increasing the risk of mental

A new report from the European Environment Agency warns that environmental pollution can contribute to mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety and worsening of psychiatric illnesses. The agency calls for urgent action to reduce pollution in Europe.

According to the report, some forms of pollution are particularly problematic:

1. Air pollution

Exposure to air pollution during pregnancy, childhood and adolescence is linked to changes in brain structure and function. High levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) have been linked to a greater risk of depression. Periods of high pollution may worsen symptoms of schizophrenia.

2. Noise pollution

Noise from road traffic, trains, and airplanes can activate the body's stress response. For every 10 decibel increase in noise level, the risk of depression and anxiety increases slightly. Airplane noise appears to have the strongest link to depression.

3. Toxic chemicals

Exposure to lead and hormone-disrupting chemicals, especially early in life, may increase the risk of mental problems later in life.

Mental health disorders are among the leading causes of illness and death in the EU. The EU agency says reducing pollution would bring major benefits to mental health.
It also suggests more green spaces and nature in cities, outdoor activities such as walking in the woods or gardening, and stronger policies to reduce air, noise and chemical pollution. /CNA
