Meloni: The agreement with Albania on migrants is becoming standard European

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, delivered her speech today at the International Conference of the Global Alliance Against Migrant Smuggling.

During her speech, Meloni commented on the review of the EU's migration system, approved by European interior ministers this week, which, among other things, should enable Italy's plan to run migrant centers outside the bloc in Albania to overcome legal obstacles that have prevented it from starting work.

The amendments, which complement the Pact on Migration and Asylum adopted in 2024, include expanded deportation measures and legally allow the establishment of return centers for asylum seekers rejected abroad, provided they adhere to specific security criteria for migrants.

"Italy has worked to propose innovative solutions that are now seen with growing interest and are becoming common practice. I am referring mainly to the Albania Protocol. Managing asylum requests and returns outside the EU, but under European jurisdiction - this model is part of the path followed at European level ," Meloni said. /CNA
