A memorial ceremony was held today at the "Resurrection of Christ" Cathedral in Korça in honor of Llazar Zai Fundo, on the 81st anniversary of his passing.
Relatives, family members and believers gathered to remember his life and figure, while candles were lit as a sign of respect. During the mass, the family remembered Llazar Zai Fundo as a man with strong convictions and ideals that, according to them, were courageous for the time.
His granddaughter, Elisaveta Fundo Poçari, shared her emotions and reflections on the figure of the uncle she had never known, but about whom she has learned more in recent years. She expressed regret that the family has lived for decades with the stigmatizations of time, while today they feel closer to his memory and history.

"Today we commemorated our uncle, Lazar Zai Fundo. Lazar has the 81st anniversary of his death. I have the 82nd anniversary of my birth and I never knew this uncle. I am very sorry that perhaps I, as our grandmothers say, may have fallen into sin, you understand why, because we too did not like the things that were said. I learned many things at this time about this uncle that I did not know and he did not know me. He had perhaps the right thoughts for that time, but for others he could have been wrong. I do not like that for an uncle, for a grandfather, for a great-grandfather, for an uncle, for a brother, for a grandson or granddaughter, the following generation, grandson or great-grandson, should suffer. Zai was for a united Europe and God willing we will enter a united Europe as soon as possible", said Elisaveta Fundo Poçari.
At the memorial ceremony, it was emphasized that the family has long suffered from the moral burden of past events, while today's generation is trying to gain a deeper understanding of its roots and family figures.

"We have felt his death for 81 years, at home it was not talked about much at that time, but in the time of democracy we learned more things. I am very sorry. I went to the cemetery, lit a candle for him and today it seems to me that he was buried soon and we are holding a memorial for him. May his memory be eternal!"
The ceremony ended with prayers and tributes, while those present underlined that the memory of Llazar Zai Fundo will remain alive among his family and the community. Llazar Zai Fundo was one of the most unique and controversial figures in Albanian history of the early 20th century.
He was one of the first representatives of the Albanian left-wing movement, initially engaged with communist ideas, but later distanced himself from them, becoming one of the earliest critics of Stalinism.

He became involved in the democratic and revolutionary movements of the time, becoming part of the international debate on the directions that communism was taking. Today, Llazar Fundo is considered one of the most interesting and complex voices in Albanian political history, while appreciation for him continues to grow with the reconstruction of the historical memory of the past years.
