14 years since the tragic event of "January 21"
January 21

A full 14 years have passed since the serious event of "January 21", one of the most tragic dates, where four people were killed on the "Martyrs of the Nation" Boulevard.

On January 21, 2011, Aleks Nika, Ziver Veizi, Hekuran Deda, and Faik Myrtaj became victims of the opposition protest.

The then opposition, now in government, protested in front of the Prime Minister's Office, a protest that degenerated into violence and clashes, while fire was opened from inside the Prime Minister's Office, resulting in the tragic death toll of four victims.

It was 2:00 PM when the protesters walked from Skanderbeg Square to the Prime Minister's Office, while the police had taken measures to prevent any vehicles from entering.

The crowd began chanting against then-Prime Minister Sali Berisha, while just a few minutes later, stones and hard objects began being thrown at the police.

The situation became tense after protesters attempted to enter the courtyard of the Prime Minister's Office, while police protected the inner building.

For a moment, gunshots began to be heard from inside the territory of the Prime Minister's Office, and these shots left 4 victims: Hekuran Deda, Ziver Veiz, Faik Myrtaj, and Aleks Nikaj.

The Socialist Party and the victims' families say that justice has not yet been served for the victims. Even Prime Minister Edi Rama calls the January 21 file a test for the reformed Albanian justice system. The January 21 event is one of the most tragic dates of Albanian democracy and the long and tiring transition.

Perhaps after the opening of the warehouses in 1997, it is the most serious and responsible event in the country's political history./ CNA
